Little Rock seeks community input on proposed I-30 deck park

Little Rock leaders will host a public meeting this week about a proposed highway green space. The gathering allows residents to shape plans for a deck over Interstate 30. The open-house session is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22.

The meeting runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It takes place in the East Little Rock Community Center gym. The center is located at 2500 E. Sixth St.

The proposed project would build green space over Interstate 30 between Sixth and Ninth streets. The structure would reconnect neighborhoods separated by the highway. Officials said an ongoing planning study is evaluating if the project is feasible.

The study also evaluates how the space could best serve the public, city officials said. Attendees can review park alternatives. They can also ask questions about potential features.

No formal presentation is scheduled. Visitors may drop in at any time. Nearby residents, business owners and other interested people may attend.

A deck park covers a roadway to create new usable land. Feasibility studies typically review engineering limits, construction costs and local public design preferences before final plans move forward.

Project information and meeting materials will be available starting Oct. 22 at lri30deckpark.publicmtgs.com. The public can send questions to [email protected].
