Lena Dunham to bring back Girls for five-episode run in Los Angeles
Creator Lena Dunham will revive the television series in Los Angeles for five episodes. The network confirmed the project a full decade following the original program finale.
HBO announced the development on Tuesday. Key cast members will return to their roles:
- Allison Williams
- Jemima Kirke
- Zosia Mamet
- Andrew Rannells
Judd Apatow will return as executive producer. The network announcement made no mention of Adam Driver joining the cast. Production begins in 2027.
The original television series ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. Filming will resume in Los Angeles ten years after the show concluded.
Dunham explained the decision in a statement.
“We always said we would only return to GIRLS if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day.”
Dunham shared that ideas surfaced around her fortieth birthday. She noted the characters began talking to her again. It was hard to get them to stop.
Television production schedules establish filming dates years in advance. Cable networks often revisit completed programs for limited formats. Los Angeles hosts studio facilities that manage these production cycles.
HBO announced no further casting details on Tuesday. Plans remain set for 2027.
