John Boozman leads Farm Bill 2.0 through Senate committee in Little Rock
Arkansas Senator John Boozman helped advance federal agriculture legislation through a Senate committee in Little Rock. The panel approved the measure in a party-line vote.
Boozman serves as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell returned to the chamber. McConnell cast the deciding vote on the proposal.
The five-year proposal strengthens crop insurance and other risk-management programs for growers. It expands conservation alongside specialty crop assistance. The measure provides funding to help farmers sell goods overseas.
The legislation includes investments for rural areas across Little Rock and the nation. Funds target broadband, drinking water, food processing and local health care. It allows year-round E15 fuel sales.
Democrats opposed the bill over a provision about SNAP costs. The rule requires individual states to help cover those expenses. Opponents argued states need more time to reduce SNAP error rates.
Senate committees review proposed legislation before measures reach the full legislative body. Lawmakers reconcile differences between House and Senate versions before sending legislation to the president.
The measure now heads toward a vote by the full Senate. Little Rock lawmakers would then reconcile the legislation with the House version.
