David Holliday speaks out after road rage shooting in Memphis

David Holliday is recovering after gunfire struck his vehicle during a delivery run in Memphis last week. He suffered a broken femur, and his roommate suffered a gunshot wound to the jaw. An Arkansas resident, Holliday had been working to earn extra money through DoorDash.

Holliday said he was riding in Whitehaven with his girlfriend and his roommate. Someone inside a red four-door sedan opened fire on their truck. His roommate was driving during the trip.

The roommate made a right turn at a red light on Winchester. Holliday said they nearly collided with the red sedan. The driver of the red car pulled ahead, brake-checked them, and followed them.

“We tried to get away from them. They kept pulling up beside us, and the roommate tried to get away from them more and more, and they just started shooting at us,” said Holliday.

Holliday sat in the back seat behind his girlfriend. He heard nearly a dozen gunshots. The gunfire shattered the truck windows.

Broken glass caused cuts across Holliday’s right arm. One bullet penetrated the door, grazed his right leg, entered his left leg, and broke his femur bone. Holliday underwent surgery on his knee.

Another bullet passed directly through his roommate’s jaw, Holliday said. The roommate went into shock but managed to bring the truck to a stop. They called 911 for help.

Police officers arrived at the Memphis scene and observed blood throughout the truck. Officers also found five bullet holes on the passenger-side door. Holliday counted four bullets near his door and one in the front passenger door.

Another bullet pierced the frame near the windshield, Holliday said. He faces at least six weeks off his feet. He will also require physical therapy.

“Any donation, no matter the amount, would help relieve some of this pressure and give us a little more stability while I wait for short-term disability,” he said.

Holliday remains in pain. He is uncertain how he will pay his medical bills. He does not know why the encounter escalated.

“God was with us that day. I know that,” Holliday said. Every day I’m in pain when I get up, when I go shower, try to eat something, I just go outside and appreciate life.”

Local law enforcement agencies collect physical evidence and interview witnesses to identify suspects after violent roadway encounters. Investigators also examine vehicles for ballistics data. Tip lines allow community members to submit anonymous reports.

Police said the Memphis investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
