Erik von Detten sued in Los Angeles over elder abuse

Former Disney actor Erik von Detten faces a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles alleging financial elder abuse and fraud. An elderly couple seeks to recover nearly $1 million in alleged investment losses.

Eighty-five-year-old Sheila Greenberg and 97-year-old Norman Greenberg filed the complaint against Von Detten and Rosland Capital. The plaintiffs claim they lost $900,000. Rosland Capital buys gold and precious metals.

The couple saw a television commercial for Rosland Capital in 2020. They contacted the company and connected with Von Detten. They told him they had about $2 million in retirement funds.

The Greenbergs admitted they knew little about gold. Von Detten told them he could help. The couple then ordered about $1 million in Lady Liberty gold coins.

Those coins were sent to a warehouse instead of their home. The lawsuit accuses Von Detten of making a second purchase of roughly $1 million in coins.

The filing claims the couple invested $2.1 million in total. The coins were allegedly worth only $1.3 million. The lawsuit alleges the company and Von Detten marked up the prices.

The Greenbergs seek to recover their losses. They also ask the Los Angeles court for punitive damages.

Von Detten voiced Sid Phillips in “Toy Story.” He also appeared in the Disney Channel movie “Brink!” and the series “So Weird.” He joined Rosland Capital in 2018.

Attorneys for Rosland Capital said they cannot comment directly on the lawsuit. They released a statement explaining the company’s status.

“We can state that as counsel for Rosland Capital LLC as debtor in possession, we have worked with the Creditors Committee to create a liquidating trust which will have the power to investigate the financial history of the company to provide answers to the claims of the Greenbergs and other investors,” the attorneys wrote.

A civil lawsuit allows private parties to resolve disputes over financial injuries. A debtor in possession operates a business under court supervision during restructuring or liquidation.

Reporters in Los Angeles reached out to representatives for Von Detten. They did not respond.
