Prince Harry and Meghan make first joint appearance in Nottingham
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan visited three Nottingham charities on Thursday for their first joint public appearance since returning. The outing marks their push to rebuild their British brand six years after stepping back from royal duties. Their schedule included touches of royal style and a prearranged media pool. Archewell received little mention during the day.
King Charles III made clear the couple remain non-working members of the royal family. A palace letter sent to senior government officials in September confirmed their status. The letter stressed they must refrain from using their titles of His and Her Royal Highness. Any charity work must be done as private citizens.
Palace officials released the letter to the media. The action demonstrated concern that the couple could become a parallel royal court. Officials worried they might compete with the Prince and Princess of Wales for public support.
The couple visited three familiar community organizations during the trip.
- Community Recording Studio, which uses music, performance and athletic programs to teach practical skills to youth.
- Himmah, central England’s biggest food bank.
- Epic Partners, which offers sports, education and mentoring programs for disadvantaged young people.
Harry has worked with the recording studio and Epic Partners for over a decade. Meghan collaborated with Himmah on a community cookbook published in 2018. They made their first joint public appearance in Nottingham in 2017 after announcing their engagement.
The couple stepped away from royal duties to move to California. They said they wanted to earn their own living. They signed media contracts with Netflix and Spotify. Relations deteriorated after the couple accused palace staff of insensitivity regarding mental health. They also made allegations of racism and media manipulation against family members.
Tensions eased recently. Harry said he wanted his children to know their 77-year-old grandfather. Charles continues treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer found in 2024.
The family reportedly lives at a private residence in the Cotswolds. The rural district lies west of Oxford. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, recently changed schools because of security issues. Harry continues to lobby for publicly funded police protection. He said his family remains under threat.
Nottingham is a regional city in central England known for its local civic and charitable partnerships. Working royals carry out official public engagements on behalf of the reigning monarch. Non-working members pursue independent careers without state-funded royal security.
The couple previously stepped back from official public functions before their return to Britain.
