Two people dead after separate shootings in Little Rock area
Two people were found dead in separate incidents across Little Rock and North Little Rock. Police are investigating both weekend cases while families search for answers.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified suspects in either case. Little Rock police discovered a body behind a home in the 4200 block of West 24th Street. Resident Mohammed Alwan said gunfire erupted overnight around 11:41 p.m.
Alwan said he and his son were preparing to sleep when shots rang out. He noted that the gunfire occurred between 12 and 1.
“I hear shots above my head, tick, tick, tick.”
Alwan dropped to the floor as bullets struck windows and doors throughout the home. He estimated that more than 10 shots were fired. He said at least three or four windows and two doors were struck.
Shattered glass and bullet fragments were left scattered across the floors. Police and emergency responders arrived and checked on Alwan. He said his heart was pumping after the frightening experience.
Across the Arkansas River, North Little Rock police investigated another fatal shooting. Deloris Marbley said her family had gathered to celebrate her son returning from prison. A vehicle drove up to a yield sign near the gathering and someone opened fire.
Her daughter, Latasha Butler, was shot in the chest and died at the scene. Her son, Joe Butler, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. He was transported to a hospital.
Marbley said she first aided her injured son out on the street. She then saw Butler lying face down by a truck without breathing or moving. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures on Butler, but she did not survive.
Investigators processed the scene for several hours. Marbley remembered Butler as a hardworking mother of six children and three grandchildren. She said she still struggles to believe the loss occurred.
Longtime friend and sister-in-law Michelle Mathis received a call about the shooting around 7:30 a.m. or 8 a.m. Mathis said Joe Butler is recovering from his injuries. She described the event as senseless violence.
Local police departments manage crime scenes by collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and requesting public tips. Detectives coordinate with forensic units to process ballistics and identify potential suspects. Officers also document physical damage to nearby structures during ongoing inquiries.
Anyone with information about the incident on West 24th Street should call the Little Rock Police Department. People with information regarding the shooting in North Little Rock can contact the North Little Rock Police Department.
