Two people died after gunfire erupted late Friday night at a Northridge venue near California State University, Northridge. LAPD officers are investigating the fatal incident and searching for a potential third victim.

Gunfire reports first came in at 11:05 p.m. from University Plaza shopping center. The retail center sits at the corner of Nordhoff and Reseda Boulevard.

Officers arrived on scene to find two victims, an LAPD spokesperson said. LAPD Lt. Guy Golan later confirmed both individuals died.

“Unfortunately, those two victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” Golan said.

Golan described the decedents as a man and a woman. Both victims were believed to be between 18 and 25 years old.

Authorities were searching for another possible victim, Golan said. LAPD officers could not provide a suspect description.

Video showed people rushing out of Artist Lounge on the second floor. The club sits west of parking lots that separate the mall from Northridge campus grounds.

Online listings show the venue hosts rehearsals, productions, meetings and content creation. The space rents on Peerspace for $110 to $265 per hour.

Officials did not confirm the exact event type. Early reports suggest an open mic event was underway.

Footage from inside showed a live performance occurring inside the packed room. Several people were detained. Officials did not confirm any arrests.

One witness said the shooter appeared to target two specific people.

“It all happened so fast,” the witness said. “This guy pulls out a gun from his waist and aims at one person – boom – then he turned around to get another guy, but he totally missed and got someone else in the back.”

Homicide detectives routinely process crime scenes to document evidence and interview witnesses. Investigators canvass nearby areas to secure surveillance footage.

The scene remained active at 6 a.m. Saturday in Northridge. Homicide detectives continued their investigation inside and around the venue.
