Tom Cruise to receive AFI life achievement award in Los Angeles
Tom Cruise will receive a life achievement award from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, trustees announced Wednesday. The honor celebrates his career as an actor and producer across more than four decades in cinema.
The institute will present the honor at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre on April 24 next year. Proceeds from the Los Angeles tribute will support education and arts initiatives at the institute.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the institute board of trustees, said in a statement. She praised his commitment as an actor and producer. Kennedy also praised his belief in the ability of movies to bring people together.
Cruise, 64, has worked in film for over four decades. He starred in movies including “Risky Business,” “A Few Good Men,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Minority Report” and the “Mission: Impossible” series. He earned Academy Award nominations for lead acting in “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire.” Cruise also earned a supporting actor nomination for “Magnolia.”
Cruise earned a best picture nomination as a producer for “Top Gun: Maverick.” Last year, he received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The institute established the award in 1973. It recognizes an individual whose work has advanced film art. The honor also requires work that has stood the test of time.
Past recipients include:
- John Ford
- Bette Davis
- Sidney Poitier
- Steven Spielberg
- Denzel Washington
- Nicole Kidman
- Eddie Murphy
Murphy received the honor earlier this year. Cruise now joins the roster of recipients in Los Angeles.
