Bayern Munich faces Arsenal in Munich Champions League matchup Wednesday
European soccer heavyweights will meet in Munich on Wednesday during a busy night of tournament action. The contest sets a high-scoring German club against an unbreached English defense in group play. Six-time winner Bayern Munich took four points from six in the competition so far.
Arsenal reached the final last season. The English side won back-to-back European games without allowing any goals. It also shares the top defensive mark domestically with five goals allowed across seven games.
The German squad scored 36 goals in 10 games this season. It enters the contest following a 6-1 victory over Leipzig in league play.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has a viral infection and is doubtful to attend. Midfielder Joshua Kimmich will miss the game due to a family death, the club said Wednesday.
Real Madrid hosts Leipzig on Wednesday before playing Barcelona on Sunday. Madrid manager José Mourinho remains engaged in a dispute with the Spanish league over refereeing decisions. Madrid required three late goals to defeat Roma last week.
Elsewhere, Como hosts Manchester United in a 10,000-seat stadium named Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Italian champion Inter Milan seeks its first European points this season against Shakhtar Donetsk at the San Siro in Milan.
The Champions League features elite clubs from across the continent. Group stage matches determine seeding for the knockout rounds. Victories earn clubs three points in the standings.
Five other matches take place Wednesday across the continent:
- Lille vs. Galatasaray
- Real Betis vs. Feyenoord
- Club Brugge vs. Lens
- Aston Villa vs. Viking
- Sporting Lisbon vs. LASK
