LeBron James opens record 24th NBA season with Philadelphia 76ers in New York
LeBron James scored his first points with the Philadelphia 76ers in New York on Tuesday night. The milestone basket launched his record 24th NBA season as Philadelphia chases a championship. He took a pass from Joel Embiid in the paint. He then scored an uncontested right-handed layup.
The Sixers expect many more points over the next two seasons. Embiid looked toward the rafters for the new banner during the national anthem. James sat nearby on the bench with bowed head and clasped hands.
Workers raised the championship banner during a pregame ceremony at Madison Square Garden. The 76ers hope for that same celebration on opening night next season. James wore No. 23 for Philadelphia.
A different opening night plan once seemed plausible for James at the Garden. Agent Rich Paul said the Knicks were the top free agency choice for James. Paul said that choice depended on New York not winning the title last season.
The drive to end another title drought keeps James playing. He previously ended a championship drought in Cleveland. Fans in New York still showed hostility toward the visiting star.
They chanted loudly during the second quarter. Spectators yelled “We don’t want you!” when James stepped to the free-throw line.
Philadelphia assembled a potent lineup this summer to pursue a first title since 1983. Jaylen Brown started alongside James, Embiid, Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. James quickly assisted Brown on a cut to the basket.
Questions remain about how the four primary ballhandlers and Edgecombe will share touches. James addressed team chemistry following the preseason finale.
“We’re just getting together. It’s not going to be perfect. We’ve got some things to build on.”
Excitement spread across Philadelphia leading up to the home opener on Thursday against Cleveland. Murals appeared across town and fans purchased jerseys quickly. Preseason games sold out. More than 10,000 fans attended an open scrimmage.
James took helicopter rides between New York and the team facility in New Jersey. Younger teammates admitted feeling awestruck upon first meeting him. James leads the league in career scoring, games, minutes, field goals and attempts.
Sixers coach Nick Nurse contacted former coaches of James before the contest. Nurse wanted insight on directing the four-time league MVP.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of amazing laundry list of things that you’re going to say. ‘You’re going to really like coaching him,’ and that is the case.”
James remained in the locker room during the pregame ring presentation. Jalen Brunson and the Knicks accepted their rings on the court.
Madison Square Garden is an indoor sports arena located in Midtown Manhattan. The venue hosts professional basketball games, hockey matches and concerts throughout the year.
The veteran star now plays for his fifth championship ring. The city of Philadelphia waits for the outcome.
