Judge Keeps Albuquerque Shooting Suspect Behind Bars Ahead of Trial

A New Mexico judge has refused to release an 18-year-old charged in a downtown Albuquerque shooting, ruling that Isaiah Martinez will remain in custody until trial.

The order came at a pretrial detention hearing in Bernalillo County, where prosecutors argued Martinez poses an ongoing danger to the public. Second Judicial District Judge Emeterio Rudolfo agreed, sending him back to the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The shooting unfolded early on a Sunday morning after what police describe as a street dispute. A ShotSpotter alert picked up 17 gunshots near Central Avenue and 8th Street NW, and responding officers found a man with severe wounds; medics rushed him to a trauma center in critical condition.

Court documents say Martinez and 18-year-old Matthew Akugue walked to a car after the argument, then drove up to the victim near the Central and 8th roundabout. Police allege Martinez pointed a gun from the vehicle and fired repeatedly at close range before the car sped off. Detectives later arrested both men.

The case now moves toward indictment and trial in the Second Judicial District Court.
